Finding Joy in the Season

Finding Joy in the Season

The alarm clock rang at 5:15 am sharp. As I began to drag myself out of bed, thoughts started racing before my feet even hit the floor. Like a card catalog organizing titles of books, my mind spun through the plethora of things that must get done that day.

Back then, several years ago now, I would quickly let the hot water run over me in the shower before hopping out to put myself together for the day. By 6:00 A.M., I would wake my babies up and quickly change their clothes to head out the door to daycare. With sleep still in their eyes, they would stumble to the car in the dark to start their day. By 6:45 A.M., I was facing the hustle of the day in what I thought would be my lifelong career. As soon as I entered my work environment, I switched from “mom” mode to “work” mode and was all business. But fleeting thoughts would creep in throughout the day of the sweet babies I had left behind earlier that morning. Their faces would flash before my mind’s eye and guilt would creep in. I shoved the thoughts aside to focus on what I had to do that day.

Soon, 5:00 P.M. arrived. I rushed out the door to pick up my sweet little ones. My mind still raced with thoughts on how to get dinner on the table, a workout in, and spend quality time with my family. Some days it was just all too much and I would just stop and cry.

Have you been there? Are you currently living this or something similar? This was not the life I had dreamed of. But it was where God needed me at the moment…in that season.

Now looking back, I can see that is exactly what it was. A season. God has brought me so far since that time. And through so much. And I wouldn’t trade that time now for anything. It taught me a lot about myself. And it brought me to where I am today. But, oh sweet friends, how hard it is to see clearly when you’re in the middle of a hard season. Even now, as I work from home and home school my now BIG boys, I’m anxious to see what the next chapter will bring.

Why do we do that, precious sisters? God leads us into these seasons for a reason. And it’s often so hard to find our joy when we’re in the thick of it, isn’t it? As we approach Christmas, I pray that you would stop and enjoy the “season” you are in now.

Praise Him for where you are TODAY. Let’s let go of what we’re holding onto that is causing us to miss the joy TODAY.

May you be blessed with peace and joy not only this Christmas season but the whole year through!

Blessings,

Nikki McCullough
