For me Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year! My parents always made a big effort to make December a special time by filling it with beautiful traditions and Christ-centeredness. This is something that I want for my future family to enjoy. As a woman you have the powerful ability to set the tone in your home. Your influence and planning can encourage closeness, unity and Christ-centeredness in your home. One of the ways you can do this is through preparing Christmas traditions.

Christmas traditions and Christ-centeredness usually doesn’t just happen. I feel it’s important to plan ahead and set aside time to do these things. Good intentions are great but solid planning and preparation is what makes it happen.

How to plan now for Christmas Traditions:

I’m a list person so I find, for myself, that list making to be the most effective way to plan things. If I don’t write it down I often forget and the great idea I once had is lost or put off until the last minute. It would be a good idea to think about how you can make Christmas time special and then write down all your ideas. It doesn’t need to be a long list just a few fun things you would like to do with your family and a few ways to remember Christ is the center of this holiday. Mothers with children can do this but it would be a great idea for young women preparing for motherhood to plan ahead by make a list of priorities and fun traditions now.

Each family’s traditions will look different and that’s a good thing because each family is different but here is a short list with a few ideas our family has enjoyed.

Christmas Tradition Ideas:

Buy a Christian devotional and go through Advent with your family
Read the Christmas Story throughout the month to your children
Memorize and recite passages from Luke 2
Minister in song at your local nursing home
Prepare goodies for unsaved friends, neighbors, and service men
Set up a Christmas Carol/Hymn-sing
Drive around and look at Christmas lights
Make and decorate a gingerbread house
Watch a classic Christmas movie together
Decorate cookies as a family
Decorate the tree together
Visit a living nativity scene

Planning ahead is a valuable thing. I would encourage you to keep in mind that traditions can be a wonderful but their purpose isn’t to add extra stress to the holiday. The purpose is to grow your family closer while keeping them focused on Jesus Christ!
