She is ten......ten years old. For mothers of daughters that speaks a lot. She is going through a time of change. She is not sure if she is girl or a grown up. Her body says she is a grown up and her heart and mind tell her she is a girl. She is confused. She has an array of hormones flying around and she doesn't know how to deal with all of them yet. I remember. I remember well.
I must listen to her side of the story. I must listen to what she says to me about everything she is going through. I can't expect her to feel like I did. I can't expect her to experience the same things that I did. I must not compare.
Most of the time we mommas we want to protect our young. When our girl is starting to blossom and change and experience a new period in her life we seem to jump right back to that time that we remember in our own lives. We want to have a do over. We want to tell her everything so she won't experience any of the confusion. We want to say I know, I know, it will get better. I promise. We want to tell her everything we went through so she knows she isn't strange or out of the ordinary. We want to shield her from all the bad and just make the changes all sound somewhat less important since all women go through them.
Maybe what she wants and needs is silence. Maybe she wants to experience it for herself alongside you with your quiet understanding. She will get through it. We all do. She may not want to talk, to hug, to be mama's little girl when you want her to be. But know, one day, she will come to you with open arms needing to talk to you and not her friends.....needing a hug that only mama can provide......needing advice because she knew you experienced it too.
Quit comparing your life and your experiences with your daughter. Let her be her....her own unique self that God created. She may be the complete opposite of you but that is how God wanted her to be.....just her....not a mini you.
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them;male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27 NIV
The most important thing to do is pray. Pray and continue to pray for your daughter. That is what she needs. Pray for her in front of her, alongside her, without her. Just pray and ask God to oversee all of the changes she is going through.
For that matter - pray for yourself too. Ask God to get you through this time of change. Your daughter is turning into a woman right before your eyes and some days you may need more prayer than she does.
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
2 Peter 3:18 NIV
