Visual Latin is a program that teaches Latin by using videos. The man who teaches on the video is named Dwane Thomas and he is an excellent teacher! When you think of learning Latin the first word that might come to your mind is "boring" but Dwane does a great job in keeping your interest and keeping the video short enough that he doesn't lose you.
The website shares some reasons why students and parents love their program:
- It’s better to make students laugh than yawn. (LOL! I love this reason!)
- Shorter videos teach more effectively than longer ones.
- Small successes lead to big successes.
- Children like reading Latin more than memorizing it.
Visual Latin is available as either a download or on DVD. Each DVD or download has 10 lessons. Latin 1 consists of Lessons 1-30. Latin 2 consists of Lessons 31-60. I was able to download these right on to my Ipad and now, my son has a Latin class that he can take anywhere in the house with him. You can also download them on your computer. Each lesson is divided into three segments. The first day he watches the video and then for the next three days he works on the worksheets and activities that are given. On the final day the child will be able to translate after hearing Dwane read from the Latin Vulgate Bible. This was my son's favorite part.
You can start this program at the age of 9, as long as they are reading. I have always heard the younger the better on learning foreign language so this is not just for high schoolers.
If you are looking for a high school credit this program would be good for one high school foreign language credit. However if you are looking for for more they have great recommendations to give a full course . For those who do, they recommend supplementing Latin 1 with Lingua Latina Pars 1 and Lingua Latina Exercita 1. They have created a free Visual Latin/Lingua Latina Teaching Guide that you can use to match them together over a two-year period.
Children do so much better when they are excited about the teacher and when the presentation of the material is fun to learn. Visual Latin has done a wonderful job with both!
They have 6 free lesson downloads available for anyone on VisualLatin.com so make sure you check them out!
I was given this program free to review. All opinions are 100 percent mine.
