January brings a time of organizing. Out with the old…in with the new. As I look over our home inventory and organize, cleaning out closets and planning for the year ahead, I've found that January is also a great time to freshen my spiritual closet. You know how you can look through your wardrobe and find some things that just don't belong? That happens in our spiritual wardrobes as well! Things just get a little stale, dust webs form in the corners, and we don't see them until we carefully examine.
Ephesians 6 gives as an outline of putting on the whole armor of God. I've never tried on one piece of actual armor- the closest I've come is camouflage! But I can relate to shirts, pants, purses, hats and shoes, even accessories. Let's take a look at our everyday spiritual wardrobes and freshen them up, shall we?
1. Belts not only look great; they serve the purpose of keeping your pants in place.
One simple way to freshen your spiritual winter closet is to be sure that what fills your mind is true. A foundation of truth will hold your thoughts together firmly. Be conscientious about how you are feeding your mind. (Ephesians 6:14) Perhaps negative thought patterns needs to get tossed.
2. Maybe Mama needs a new pair of shoes.
Eph. 6:15 says " with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace." How often have you heard that the shoes make the outfit? :) When we are prepared to deliver peace no matter what comes our way, then our feet are beautiful and ready. This preparation comes from spending time with God. How's the quiet time? Need a little "shoe polish?" Participating in an online Bible study, such as the one offered with Good Morning Girls, or maybe the daily encouragement of the Bible Reading Challenge on my blog would have those shoes polished in no time.
3. Hats are fun and can serve all different purposes.
They can be for warmth, protection from the sun, or protection from wind. Eph. 6:17 tells us that our spiritual helmet is salvation- knowing Christ as Savior. Maybe you've been a Christian for a long time and your helmet is a bit tarnished. Or in our terms today, your cutest floppy beach hat is dented. Take some time to visit the memory of when you accepted Christ. Praise Him for what He has performed in your life and those dents will be smoothed out in no time.
4. Whenever I wear lipstick (probably not as often as I should), then it is the last thing I put on.
Now you are probably wondering, "What in the world does the whole armor of God have to do with lipstick?" Eph. 6:18 ends the discussion on the armor of God with "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests." The freshness of lips in prayer is what God loves to hear! That finishing touch of lipstick in my makeup routine changes my face- it brightens my smile. When we listen to the Holy Spirit whispering to our hearts, our prayers can be continually uplifting and encouraging others.
How about you? I'd love if it you would share some practical ways you've found to "update" your spiritual wardrobe.
