Learning to Speak Life

When I accepted Christ in the brisk fall of 1998, my junior year at Washington State University, one thing was very clear: I needed to change the words that were coming out of my mouth.

I will never forget that night at the alter when I was accepting Jesus in my heart. One of the things that happened during this radical transformation was a movie-like screen that I could see clearly in my mind of everything I had done that had hurt my Jesus. Yes, everything. It was during my salvation experience at the altar that night I realized one thing: I needed to learn how to speak God's life-giving words.

I always tell people that my entrance into the Kingdom of God was very radical. I came from an extremely abusive home (both verbal and physical) where words were used as weapons to destroy. I am sure many of you reading this right now can relate. My parents were also criminals who were in and out of jail and prison for drug trafficking and violent crimes. Needless to say, when the love of Jesus entered my heart that day, I was a changed woman forever.

How Learning to Speak Life™ Was Born

7+ years ago God spoke to both my husband Michael and I that it was time for us to start writing about the concept of speaking life-giving words rather than those that evoked death.

We gladly accepted the call.

Our first adult Bible study was written in 2006, called: Speak Life, Not Death. We were able to teach it for a few years before the Army would call my husband off to his 3rd year-long deployment and I would birth our third child. It was during this time that God began to give us even more understanding of what He was doing in this area of our lives. He wanted us to create an entire line of Bible studies centered around this concept. And here we are.

About the Book

Fruit of the Spirit is the very first book in the Learning to Speak Life™ Series. This fun new 9-week family Bible study is geared for families with young children ages 3-9. It examines the fruit of the Spirit according to Galatians 5:22-23 – teaching children how to speak God’s life-giving words in place of words that tear down and destroy.
