God has a way of divinely equipping moms for the job, doesn't He? Imagine the supermom power as a seed that grows beside an infant in womb. When that sweet baby is born into this world, the arms designed to cradle the baby work just as effectively to protect that baby. Combine beautiful, protective strength with the adrenaline that kicks, and there you have it- what is often affectionately deemed as"Mama Bear Mode."
Now, I don't know about you, but this mode is fierce for me. My husband sees that look in my eye and he begins to pity the person on the other end of whatever is about to be unleashed.
Mama Bear mode sure has gotten me into trouble before; maybe you too? I think Mama Bear might forget that the Holy Spirit co-exists in the same body with her. You know what I mean? And then there's an odd twist that Mama Bear often takes. She is so wonderful and protective and watching out for her babies just like God intended, but then she begins to fear what might happen to her babies. And she thinks about it some more. And some more.
"What if something happens to her?"" What if he gets hurt?" "How would we ever face it if she was seriously ill?"
There have been times in my life when, if I can be honest, I've gone too far in thinking about the possibility of bad things happening to my children. The healthy protective nature God has graciously issued to parents is a wonderful trait to embrace. However, some of us take "overprotective" to another level. If you have ever been there, you know what I'm talking about. Mama Bear mode took control and stopped basing decisions on wisdom and discernment from God. Instead, she began to obsess about all the unknowns or potential disasters. She forgot that the God in heaven who created her as part of his protection plan also holds her child in His arms- arms that are much, much bigger than hers.
You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand, high your right hand. Psalm 89:13
When I've found myself in Mama Bear mode, here are a few statements I've nailed down to remind myself that my child rests in the care of the Father.
1. God brought my baby into the world; he gave me the honor of being mother.
2. God loves my child even more than I do, though I can't comprehend it.
3. God sees my child every moment, day and night.
4. His loving arms of protection surround both me and my child.
5. His plan for my child's life is the best and will bring glory to his name.
What have you found as a reminder that God keeps your child in his loving care?
We'd love for you to share it today.
