Don’t Blink is a book for everyone. If you saw Don’t Blink in the store or online and surmised that it was a book exclusively for parents with children who have special needs, then you would be mistaken.
Don’t Blink is a book about life lessons from a couple who’ve had their perspective dramatically changed in the most beautiful way. Anyone can read this book and whoever chooses to, will walk away cherishing life more, being more patient, and becoming increasingly aware of the simple, yet grand blessings which are all around.
Brandon and Brittany Buell wrote this book with Angela Hunt. Brandon and Brittany found out during their pregnancy that something was different. Their son’s brain was not developing properly. Though he was misdiagnosed several times, and though some doctors had asked the Buells if they were willing to terminate the pregnancy- they declined. They kept their son.
He was born and they named their new baby boy, Jaxon Emmit. It took another 9 months along with several trials and exhausting challenges to finally arrive at the correct diagnosis for their son. In this book, you will move through the tough decisions that the parents had to make. You will get an inside look at their daily routine and wisdom that they’ve gleaned.
Most of all, you will receive the beautiful gift of perspective from these parents.
Throughout the book these parents speak as though Jaxon wrote the book. They constantly give credit to God and to Jaxon for almost everything they have learned. Understandably, they would not have learned the lessons they now know without Jaxon. However, it is clear that they are humble people.
Jaxon is miraculous and phenomenal. The doctors did not think he would live to see his first birthday, but day-by-day he continues to amaze everyone with what he can do.
What truly gripped me, was the way Brandon and Brittany love Jaxon, the way they listen to Jaxon, and the way they champion for Jaxon in every way possible. It is moving. I genuinely believe that you will want to be a better mom after reading this. I did. I revaluated what I considered to be a burden in my life because of this book.
I read this book in two days. I don’t know whether it was the story or if it was the hope that you develop for Jaxon or if it is the beauty that oozes from Brittany and Brandon’s heart. Perhaps it is a little of all these things.
I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I will say my favorite chapter is the last chapter in which Jaxon’s dad writes the last few pages of the book. He says,
Their love for their son will change you for the better.
When you read this book, you won’t get a literary masterpiece or a plot that has you racing to the end. You will get something even more worthwhile-- a priceless piece of two parents’ hearts who have been blessed with a boy who is teaching the world why life is worth living.
Buy this book. Put this book in your diaper bag or on your nightstand and read a few pages each day.
Watch how life becomes more precious.
