Biblical Support for Moms Postpartum
There is a season in a woman’s life that is perfectly designed by God to help prepare a woman for the life-long labor and journey of motherhood.
The childbearing season IS MOTHERHOOD BOOTCAMP.
When I refer to the childbearing season I am speaking specifically to the season in a woman's life when she is both with child, and when she is mothering her young babes postpartum.
The ability to partner with God in bringing forth life is an enormous privilege and blessing, yet many women dread pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Why is this?
I wholeheartedly believe this is because the culture's perspective on both motherhood, in general, as well as pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, has infiltrated the church; and it makes sense, there is not very much biblical teaching or support on the topic!
It is amazing to me how our culture has compartmentalized God out of the childbearing season. And it is NOT OK! God wants to be invited and experienced in every aspect of our lives.
It was this vision and passion that drove me to write Redeeming Childbirth. Little did I know what God's long-term vision was for this message.
As a woman, a mom of seven, a friend and a birth doula, I have served MANY women through this season and the one thing that really riles me up is the lack of practical, emotional, and spiritual support there is for women postpartum.
If we believe what God says in His word is true, that children are a blessing (Psalm 127), and if we believe what His Word says about our enemy--that we need to "be sober, be vigilant; because [our] adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" ( 1 Peter 5:8), then we should conclude that our enemy, who is the enemy of God and hates life, would naturally target women in the childbearing season--specifically postpartum--when they are weakest both physically, mentally, emotionally, and maybe even spiritually.
This is a season that we should expect the enemy would attack. This foreknowledge should motivate us to be prepared, vigilant in protecting our minds, hearts, and homes from his attacks! But the reality is that many women find themselves battling doubts, fears, and feeling inadequate--all of which are NOT from the Lord, but rather instigated by our enemy. Most moms plan for their birth, but neglect to create a postpartum plan that sets them up for success so that they can enjoy their baby!
The enemy's main goal is to disable moms because they have incredible influence in their children's lives, their marriages, and in future generations perspectives regarding motherhood.
According to the CDC, in the US, 11-20% of women struggle with PPD! One out of nine women! And these stats only reflect those who were willing to get diagnosed or admit they needed help! With the stigma surrounding postpartum conditions, you can guarantee there most certainly are more women who likely struggle. And from what I have witnessed and experienced first hand, there are even more who experience high anxiety and control issues during this season.
I truly believe that this CAN change!
There should be more help, both practically speaking as well as emotionally and spiritually.
The Word of God is more than sufficient for teaching on EVERY topic, issue, trial, discomfort, fear, or suffering we experience in this life.
