Can entertainment be enriching and even educational for our children? Yes, but it isn’t easy to find. Screen time and smartphones seem to have inundated our society at a younger age than ever before. In today’s culture, it is hard to find something that is wholesome, fun, AND cool.
Some of my very favorite resources for my children are when their imaginations are engaged, and learning is made fun. Because of the struggle to find these great resources, I am always excited when I come across something like this that I can recommend to parents. If you are looking for a great resource, The Purple Rocket Podcast is a fabulous podcast full of engaging audio adventures for kids. It is the perfect solution to give them a break from screen time while also engaging their imaginations and sneaking in a little learning along the way.
Here is the podcast description from Apple Podcasts - "An award-winning kids podcast full of fun and adventure! Travel the world with twins Sawyer and Suzie using their Grandpa's magical globe, explore the universe aboard the Space Train, fly with fairies, spend the summer with dinosaurs at Camp Dino, and so much more! The Purple Rocket produces exciting audio adventures the whole family can enjoy! Each season is a unique, originally written series, so find a season that sounds fun and dive in, starting with episode one. Visit PurpleRocketPodcast.com to learn more."
Greg Webb is the host of The Purple Rocket Podcast, and he lives with his wife in Southern Colorado, where they homeschool their children and love exploring the outdoors as a family. You can read all about the Webb family here.
I asked my 13-year-old daughter, Sophia, to listen so I could get her honest opinion. She listened to the series "Grandpa’s Globe”, and this is what she said, “The storyline of the series kept my attention and made me want to come back for each episode to hear what happened. My favorite part was how much I learned about different countries throughout!”
The Purple Rocket Podcast has several series options to get you started. Here are a few:
Life Series is a collection of life’s greatest lessons that is all about teaching kids about being honest, saying sorry, dealing with boredom, failure, and more.
The most recent is the Camp Dino series! Here is a quick overview of this series: "Bo is a homeschooler who's just getting over his obsessive dinosaur phase. But when his parents send him to a dinosaur summer camp in the middle of the jungle, his world is turned upside down. At CAMP DINO, you don't dig for fake fossils or sit through boring classes; you RAISE your own dinosaur from an egg. Join Bo and his friends on an unforgettable adventure into the world of dinosaurs!"
With Christmas just around the corner, they even have an episode of Grandpa's Globe that reviews the nativity story! To read about all the different series, you can go here.
As The Purple Rocket Podcast shares on their website, quality entertainment without the screen improves reading ability, improves listening skills, sparks imagination, and is educational. The Purple Rocket has even been the recipient of a Parents’ Choice Award! “The Parents’ Choice Awards is the nation’s oldest and most respected nonprofit program created to recognize quality children’s media and toys.” The Purple Rocket Podcast is available to download directly to your device to listen in, on Apple Podcasts and more.
