Mom, Don't Give Up or Give In
It takes courage to be a Christian Mom today.
It's not popular and it's not easy. Do you ever think, “What is going on with the world today?”
There used to be a term, Good Christian People. You know the one? In today's culture, there is a perception about Christian people and it isn't that they are good.
You know that verse in John 15:18-25 that says, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.”
Since the time of Christ’s ministry, Christians all over the globe have experienced the kind of persecution that John is speaking of in this passage. Yet in North America, because we were founded on Christian principles such as free will, or freedom, we hadn’t experienced the persecution that many other cultures have lived with all along regarding following Christ.
Today, though, there is a rise of intolerance and persecution directed at the Christ follower, our beliefs, and the freedoms we have been accustomed to here in the free nation. And so in turn, we, the Christian moms, are experiencing a new threat of persecution as we seek to obey God and pursue raising our children to follow Jesus and make disciples of all nations.
As a result, Biblical parenting today takes courage. It takes courage to raise families for God and uphold a standard of seeking righteousness as is defined by Scripture.
Everywhere we look, whether our social media newsfeed, politics, popular entertainment (movies, music, and media), even popular toys for sale in the children’s aisle at the local grocery store, there are agendas being promoted that seek to confuse us from living righteously.
Influence is a very powerful tool that can be used for good or destruction; and our enemy has set his eyes on destroying families, marriages, and relationships, and he uses the subtle influences of people with klout that are not Christ-centered .
But what does God’s word say?
"Be holy, because I am holy." 1 Peter 1:16
As a mom myself, I feel a sense of urgency to speak boldly and ask other moms to join me in seeking to raise our kids for the approval of God alone, not man.
When I think about the land my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Lord willing, will inherit, I am moved to my knees.
There are times that I feel helpless, and can feel discouraged, but then the Spirit of our living God whispers His word, which is recalled upon my memory that He will never leave us nor forsake us and that He has commanded us to be strong and very courageous.
I remember that the enemy wants us to throw in the towel, to give up and give in, but God’s word is not void and will endure forever.
We have been chosen to raise each of our children for a purpose--for many purposes.
We must stay the course, be diligent, and stay vigilant so that we can prepare them for His purposes!
The hand that rocks the cradle does have a massive impact on the future and we can’t lose sight of the sacred influence God has given us as moms.
Our homes are our first mission field, we can’t forget that. We can’t allow the enemy to whisper lies to us that we don’t have an impact! We do have an impact and he knows it! It frightens him.
Are you with me?
Let’s pray together for one another and our children.
Father, thank you for choosing us to bear this weight, this incredible blessing of raising the next generation in this land. Might we see that responsibility as a powerful calling and mission? Would you send your Holy Spirit to guide us and give us wisdom as we mother our children? Give us insight as we study Your Word. Help us to model for our children what living for You looks like. Give us the humility to apologize when we screw up, give us the courage to follow Your Word when the world opposes us and persecutes us. Prepare our hearts, Lord Jesus, to love like You loved. Grow in us servant heart attitudes and a teachable heart that we might be witness to who You are in this world. Help our children to grasp that learning and knowing You is an ever growing blessing. Impress upon our heart the desire to get on our knees, to weep, to seek You, to rejoice in Your goodness and truth. And Lord, may our children bear witness to all of this and may the legacy we leave be a Kingdom focused one. In Jesus Name, Amen.
